Hawzah News Agency-A fire at the Masjid Omar mosque on Busch Boulevard is now being ruled as arson, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.
The fire happened at the mosque located at 4801 E. Busch Blvd. on Aug. 5. When TFR crews arrived, smoke was filling the building. It appeared to be coming from a small refrigerator in the middle of the building. Crews secured power to the building and the fire was under control within about 15 minutes.
The fire marshal investigation initially determined that the fire had started because the fridge was plugged into a power cord not rated for the power required to run it.
This week, fire officials confirmed that the samples taken at the scene tested positive for an accelerant, specifically gasoline. It was determined that the fire was the result of an arson attack.
Mosque officials said there was some activity in the rear of the building the night before the fire. According to TFR, mosque officials believed someone had poured gasoline on the air conditioner unit attached to the building.
The damage to the building is estimated at $25,000.
Crime Stoppers offered a $3,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest in this arson case.
